A new glanapterygine catfish of the genus Listrura (Siluriformes: Trichomycteridae) from southeastern Brazil, corroborated by morphological and molecular data Neotropical Ichthyology
Villa-Verde,Leandro; Lazzarotto,Henrique; Lima,Sergio M. Q..
Listrura costai, new species, is described from small streams in a swampy coastal plain in the rio Jurumirim basin, Angra dos Reis Municipality, Rio de Janeiro State, southeastern Brazil. The new species is morphologically very similar to L. nematopteryx and L. picinguabae, all possessing only one long pectoral-fin ray. It differs from its congeners by possessing an autapomorphic character: first hypobranchial with an anterior process (vs. process absent). Other features such as coloration, numbers of opercular and interopercular odontodes, number of anal-fin rays, head length, and shape of some bone structures help to distinguish the new species from L. nematopteryx and L. picinguabae. Molecular analyses using partial sequences of the mitochondrial DNA...

A new species of Tetragonopterus Cuvier, 1816 (Characiformes: Characidae: Tetragonopterinae) from the rio Jari, Amapá, northern Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Melo,Bruno F; Benine,Ricardo C; Mariguela,Tatiane C; Oliveira,Claudio.
A new species of Tetragonopterus is described from the rio Jari, a tributary to the left margin of rio Amazonas, at the border between Amapá and Pará States, northern Brazil. It is morphologically diagnosed from the other species of the genus (T. argenteus, T. chalceus, and T. rarus new combination) by the lozenge-shaped spot on the caudal peduncle vs. rounded to square spot on the other species. Partial sequences of the mitochondrial gene Cytochrome Oxidase C subunit I, from representatives of all valid species of Tetragonopterus, including this new species, were analyzed. The obtained results revealed a significant genetic distance between the new species and its congeners. A discussion on the new combination, Tetragonopterus rarus, is also provided.

Al-Atiyat,Raed M.; Aljumaah,Riyadh S.; Abudabos,Alaeldein M.; Alotybi,Masoud N.; Harron,Raafat M.; Algawaan,Abdulaziz S.; Aljooan,Hassan S..
ABSTRACT In this study, we investigated the differentiation of five different chicken ecotypes - Center, North, South, West, and East - of Saudi Arabia using discriminate analysis. The analysis was based on nine important morphological and phenotypic traits: body color, beak color, earlobe color, eye color, shank color, comb color, comb type, comb size, and feather distribution. There was a strong significant relationship between the phenotype and effect of geographic height in terms of comb type and earlobe color in males as well as body, beak, eye, and shank color. In particular, the comb type and earlobe color differentiated the ecotypes of males. Among the females, the beak, earlobe, eye, shank color, and feather distribution had more differentiating...

Distinct genetic structure in populations of Chrysoperla externa (Hagen) (Neuroptera, Chrysopidae) shown by genetic markers ISSR and COI gene Rev. Bras. entomol.
Barbosa,Nara C. C. P.; Freitas,Sérgio de; Morales,Adriana C..
Distinct genetic structure in populations of Chrysoperla externa (Hagen) (Neuroptera, Chrysopidae) shown by genetic markers ISSR and COI gene. Green lacewings are generalist predators, and the species Chrysoperla externa presents a great potential for use in biological control of agricultural pests due to its high predation and reproduction capacities, as well as its easy mass rearing in the laboratory. The adaptive success of a species is related to genetic variability, so that population genetic studies are extremely important in order to maximize success of the biological control. Thus, the present study used nuclear (Inter Simple Sequence Repeat - ISSR) and mitochondrial (Cytochrome Oxidase I - COI) molecular markers to estimate the genetic variability...

Genetic divergence among processing tomato hybrids and formation of new segregating populations Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Figueiredo,Alex Sandro Torre; Resende,Juliano Tadeu Vilela de; Schwarz,Kélin; Marodin,Josué Clock; Galvão,Alexandre Gonçalves; Resende,Nathalia Campos Vilela.
ABSTRACT Tomato is the most important vegetable species and has a strong bottleneck effect in its domestication and evolution. In exploring the existing genetic variability in commercial germplasm, germplasm has been proven to be an excellent alternative to obtain inbred lines in order to provide superior new hybrids in the future. In this sense, the objective of this study was to estimate the genetic distance among commercial processing tomato hybrids via agronomical and quality postharvest fruit traits with the aim of suggesting promising crosses for the formation of base populations for tomato breeding. Ten hybrids of processing tomato were evaluated in a complete randomized block design with three replicates. In total, eleven agronomic and postharvest...

Genetic diversity assessment in sorghum accessions using qualitative morphological and amplified fragment length polymorphism markers Scientia Agricola
Gerrano,Abe Shegro; Labuschagne,Maryke Tine; van Biljon,Angeline; Shargie,Nemera Geleta.
Qualitative morphological and amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers were compared for assessment of genetic diversity. Nine qualitative morphological traits were recorded to compare genetic relationships among 17 sorghum accessions with information derived from six AFLP primer combinations analysis. The mean morphological genetic similarity was lower in comparison to similarity computed using AFLP markers. Genetic similarity measured by AFLP markers was similar within the Ethiopian and South African material, as well as between South African and Ethiopian material. Morphological similarity was much higher in the Ethiopian material than in the South African material, indicating that the genotypes were related. The two techniques described...

Genetic diversity between herds of Alpine and Saanen dairy goats and the naturalized Brazilian Moxotó breed Genet. Mol. Biol.
Araújo,Adriana Mello de; Guimarães,Simone Eliza Facioni; Machado,Thea Mírian Medeiros; Lopes,Paulo Sávio; Pereira,Carmen Silva; Silva,Francisco Luiz Ribeiro da; Rodrigues,Marcelo Teixeira; Columbiano,Virgínia de Souza; Fonseca,Cleusa Graça da.
Brazilian naturalized goat breeds are adapted to the semiarid conditions prevalent in the Northeast region of the country (which has the largest Brazilian goat heard) and represent an as yet uninvestigated source of genetic diversity. Currently, imported goat breeds are crossed with Brazilian naturalized goat breeds, endangering the genetic potential of the naturalized breeds. We used 11 microsatellite markers to determine the genetic diversity among imported (non-naturalized) dairy Alpine and Saanen goats and naturalized Brazilian Moxotó goats. We genotyped 292 goats from three herds (one private, one from the University of Minas Gerais and the Moxotó conservation herd from Embrapa Caprinos) and found that the general heterozygosity was 0.6952 for Alpine,...

Genetic diversity in Egeria densa and E. najas in Jupiá Reservoir, Brazil Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Mori,Edson S; Martins,Dagoberto; Velini,Edivaldo D; Marino,Celso L; Gouvêa,Cantídio F; Leite,Suzi M.M; Camacho,Edwin; Guries,Raymond P.
The aquatic plant species Egeria densa (Planch.) Casp and E. najas Planchon occur naturally in the Paraná River Basin of southeastern Brazil. Hydroelectric dam construction in the river basin has created several lakes, changing the ecology of the river and altering the population ecology of Egeria. Large, dense populations of Egeria now grow in Jupiá Lake and its tributaries, occasionally blocking hydroelectric turbines. This study is part of a larger project examining environmental changes associated with large dam projects; the research objective of this study was to assess patterns of genetic diversity in Egeria populations growing in Jupiá and Três Irmãos Lakes and their Paraná River tributaries using genetic markers. Forty-two plants of E. najas and...

Genetic diversity of captive spotted paca (Agouti paca) from south east Brazil assessed by the RAPD-PCR technique R. Bras. Zootec.
Antunes,Karine Vieira; Machado,Théa Mírian Medeiros; Serão,Nicola Vergara Lopes; Guimarães,Simone Eliza Facione; Paiva,Samuel Rezende.
The genetic diversity was analyzed among spotted paca (Agouti paca) from three commercial flocks located in Brazil. As the genome of this species is unknown, the RAPD-PCR technique was used. Ten primers generated sixty polymorphic bands. The among and within population genetic variability estimated by analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) was 12.55 and 87.45%, respectively. The shortest Nei distance value was 11.76% among the Carangola (CG) and São Francisco do Glória (SF) populations. This value can be explained by the exchange of reproduction males and females between the two geographically close breeding sites. The analysis of principal components showed well defined and structured groups aggregating animals according their population of origin, with...

Genetic diversity, population structure and AFLP markers associated with maize reaction to southern rust Bragantia
Giordani,Willian; Scapim,Carlos Alberto; Ruas,Paulo Maurício; Ruas,Claudete de Fátima; Contreras-Soto,Rodrigo; Coan,Marlon; Fonseca,Inês Cristina de Batista; Gonçalves,Leandro Simões Azeredo.
ABSTRACT Maize is one of the species with greater genetic diversity among cereals and possibly the most diverse crop species known. Accessing this variability is essential for maize breeding, allowing breeders to achieve progress of yield increasing, overcome environmental challenges or deal with pests and diseases. Among the maize diseases, southern rust is one of the most important, causing significant losses in yield and presenting severe epidemics worldwide. In the present study, the AFLP technique was applied to analyze population structure and genetic diversity among 145 tropical maize inbred lines, and to test for preliminary evidence of association between AFLP markers and the reaction to southern rust. Disease severity was evaluated in two crop...

Genetic variability and evidence of founder effect in Hemiodus orthonops (Characiformes: Hemiodontidae) from the upper Paraná River basin, Brazil Biological Sciences
Marques, Liégie Alher; Renesto, Erasmo.
Hemiodus orthonops is a small fish of the Hemiodontidae family, order Characiformes, with a maximum of 25 cm standard length. Until recently, H. orthonops was an endemic species from the Paraná-Paraguay basin and it was absent from the upper Paraná River basin. Since 2008, it has started to be collected in the upper Paraná River, representing up to 10% of catches. Two population samples of H. orthonops from two localities of the upper Parana River basin (Porto Camargo and Porto Figueira) were analyzed using the allozymes electrophoresis technique. Twenty-one enzymatic loci were detected. The population sample from Porto Camargo displayed a genetic variability (He = 0.1061) higher than that from Porto Figueira (He = 0.0580) and homozygote excess in both of...

Genetic variability of the Amazon River prawn Macrobrachium amazonicum (Decapoda, Caridea, Palaemonidae) Naturalis
Vergamini, F.G.; Pileggi, L.G.; Mantelatto, F.L..
The freshwater prawn Macrobrachium amazonicum is widely distributed in South America, and occupies habitats with a wide range of salinities. Several investigations have revealed the existence of wide intraspecific variability among different populations, although the understanding of this variability is still fragmentary and incomplete. We compared and characterized inland and coastal populations of M. amazonicum from Brazil, using molecular data (16S and COI mtDNA) to describe the degree of variability, structure, and relationships among them. Genetic divergence rates among populations showed variability at the intraspecific level. All the analyses evidenced significant genetic divergence among populations, structuring them in three groups: I- inland...

Genetics and morphology of the genus Tritetrabdella (Hirudinea, Haemadipsidae) from the mountainous rain forests of Sabah, Borneo, reveal a new species with two new subspecies Naturalis
Kappes, H..
Blood-feeding terrestrial leeches of the family Haemadipsidae are a notorious part of the invertebrate diversity in Asian and Australian rain forests. All hitherto published records of terrestrial leeches of Borneo belong to the genus Haemadipsa. Here, a second, poorly known haemadipsid genus is reported from Mount Kinabalu and Crocker Range National Park. The individuals were barcoded and compared to sequences available in GenBank. The results show that the genus Tritetrabdella has representatives in the Indochinese and the Sundaic bioregions. All six specimens from Borneo are from a single new Tritetrabdella lineage, T. kinabaluensis spec. nov. Within the Bornean lineage, two groups differing 4-5% in the COI barcoding sequence were identified. Because 1)...
